The roof covering is moving ahead – looking slightly less imposing!

Now that we have had all our scheduled deliveries it is down to us to start using the materials and get the outside finished, the windows and doors fitted and begin the interior fit-out.  We are using a local roofer to complete the roof covering – working at heights is not one of our favourite tasks! – but he will be done before Christmas, leaving the site clear for us!

Before the roofer could start we had to fit the fascia boards.  No problem – popped over to Bricomarche and bought 20 lengths of suitable timber.  Spent the weekend routing a channel for the soffits and giving the back face a coat of stain.  Fortunately the roofer helped fix them at the correct height so he could use them to set out the roofing felt and laths.  After the first week we spent the weekend giving the front face two coats of white stain and it was looking good.  What a surprise to then find today the fascia on the north side of the lower roof looks as if it hasn’t had much stain on it at all!!  The stain is a Sikkens product and cost an absolute fortune – around £140 for a 5 litre tin!  Crazy!  Fortunately when we were in Portsmouth this week collecting small materials we bought some white Bedec Barn paint which is reputed to be very good for these situations, so tomorrow we will try over-coating the useless Sikkens!  We will report back on progress!

More details to sort out so I’ll come back next week with additional photos as the slates are fitted.
